Read this with your pre-teens as a family! Excellent principles

I wanted to thank you for writing your book on Courtship and Dating. Although courtship is getting a bad rap these days, I think that the principles you outline in your book is so needed among young people, ESPECIALLY Christian families! I know many families who are afraid of going against the culture of giving privacy and independence to decide at the ripe old age of 14 to give themselves away sexually, emotionally, and physically. Last week, I shared the principles in your book (and lent the book) to a family that unintentionally hopped onto a train looking to wreck but thank the Lord their precious daughter immediately jumped off after realizing what a mistake it would be to follow this path! I think every parent (and their teenage children) should read this as a family in preparation for Biblical relationships with the opposite sex before it even starts. What a blessing!

About the Author
Fabián A. Samaniego earned his B.A. degree at New Mexico State University and completed his graduate work at the University of Iowa. He taught four years at Utah State University before going to the University of California at Davis, where he served as coordinator of the first-year Spanish program and supervisor of teaching assistants for 24 years. He also served as assistant director of several Foreign Language Competency projects for the Los Angeles and San Francisco Unified School Districts, and for the Santa Clara and Sacramento County Offices of Education. In addition, he served on the steering committee of the California Foreign Language Teacher Preparation Project and on the California Foreign Language Project Policy Board. He is frequently asked to conduct in-service workshops for schools and universities across the country. Samaniego's first-year college text, DÍMELO TÚ!, is in its sixth edition, and his intermediate text, MUNDO 21, recently published in its fourth edition. He is a co-author of LANGUAGE AND CULTURE IN LEARNING: TEACHING SPANISH TO NATIVE SPEAKERS OF SPANISH and of DIME!, a seven-book school series that includes a two-year native Spanish speaker's program: Tu mundo and Nuestro mundo.

Francisco Rodriguez Nogales is an Associate Professor of Spanish in the School of Modern Languages at Santa Barbara City College. He is a specialist in the use of technology in foreign-language teaching and online instruction--his teaching load has been 100 percent online for the past five years. He also has developed several Spanish assessment and placement tools. Nogales was born in Pedrera (Seville), Spain. He completed his bachelor of arts at the Universidad Pontificia Comillas in Madrid, his master's at San Francisco State University, and his Ph.D. at the University of California at Davis.

It explores the slipperiness of ethics as a concept and demonstrates the multiplicity of intellectual inquiry within contemporary Film Studies. At first glance, 'ethics' is not necessarily a subject conventionally associated with film. Film is often regarded as a form of 'lowbrow' popular culture, either offering bland entertainment or deliberately setting out to shock - or, more cynically, generate box office revenue - through gratuitous inclusion of sex and violence. Certainly, there have always been a minority of films based on the stereotypically 'ethical' subject of religion, but these have often generated the most controversy, from the studio system decree that it was blasphemous to represent the corporeal body of Christ to the furore surrounding Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ (1988). This book shows that from the silent era to the present day, film has been inherently concerned with ethical issues. In this light, the definition of ethics that informs the volume and is taken as the starting point of each of the chapters is the notion of personal or institutional motivation; most usually because a character or industry figure makes a decision or choice based on their own moral - or ethical - code. Once this is defined, the ethical dimension to films is immediately evident. This book takes as its central theme the difficulty of decisions refracted through personal ethical codes, and thus recognises that what counts as ethics, or morality, is always subjective. Some of the chapters explore films which take conventionally 'good' ethical standpoints, others investigate why 'bad' decisions were made; at least one explores the celebration of practices invoking popular disgust, but all the contributions study ethical decisions within film that represent the strongly felt convictions of those involved and, moreover, address aspects of filmmaking which force the spectator to be an active and reciprocal participant in the creation of meaning, thus implicitly acknowledging that ethics are subjective and in perpetual flux rather than fixed, objective truths.

Good collection of technical material with notes and vocabulary

I used to work as a technical translator and the "Technical Japanese" series by Edward Daub, et al is an excellent resource for anyone interested in reading technical material in Japanese. I own and have worked through all of the Basic Technical Japanese series (main text and supplements) as well as the earlier Comprehending Technical Japanese, so I was very interested in this volume as well.

This work is essentially a collection of several hundred short (i.e. manageable) essays in a wide variety of technical fields, with glosses and vocabulary/grammar notes (but not nearly as extensive note-wise as BTJ). Overall, I think this volume is a very well-conceived collection of materials that would work well for both classroom and self-study.

It's worth pointing out that unlike BTJ or CTJ, this volume does not have any English translations of the essays themselves. I don't think this is really an issue, since this book is clearly aimed at readers who are already reasonably proficient in reading technical Japanese and who are looking to improve their skills and/or expand their vocabulary.

Still, a very valuable and useful book for the Japanese translator or student. I do not have the accompanying glossary yet but plan to purchase that as well based on my impression of this volume. Highly recommended.
