Recapping his favorite questions and answers, discussing sexuality and acceptance DDD covers the gamut.

Don't worry, all the saucy and steamy stories he hinted at in his AMA are covered and then some. Like that 7-way orgy he briefly detailed amid the torrent of questions during his AMA. Not to mention the hunky straight gym jock who "went gay" and the poor girl who... shall we say, her lady place was a wreck after one time with DDD. It's all in there and more!

Written from first person perspective the narrative is raw, honest and often times gritty. Details are not spared and readers beware, naughty moments are revealed! The next time you see a man on the street with more than an adequate bulge in his jeans, it might just be DDD.

Bummer

DDD needs an experienced coauthor, or at least better editors. His life and experiences are fascinating but the book is a frustrating, clumsy letdown. I read the first two thirds in under an hour. The book starts off promising; while obvious that he isn't a professional writer, he does begin with genuinely touching anecdotes about his parents. The first third of the book goes downhill swiftly, with dull and clumsy storytelling that is still somehow frustratingly brief. There's no "meat" to them, no pun intended. The second third of the book literally reads like a collection of hardcore erotica. To his credit, DDD is much more in his element telling us about his sexcapades. This part of the book could stand on it's own as a collection of erotic short stories. The final third was frankly unbearable. It's just copied and pasted Q&A from reddit and Tumblr. The questions were not only repetitive but most had already been addressed previously in the book.

Sorry, DDD.

DD-Disappointing

Like many of you, I read this book because I was curious -- not so much about DDD's sexual exploits, but who he is as a person, and what shaped his world view. Sadly, I was terribly disappointed with Double Header, and I'll explain why I notched it 2-stars...

1. Grammar, spelling, punctuation, and the like. While I am by no means an expert on any of the prior, I am a voracious reader who can, for the most part, glaze past errors when they are intermittent and not overly distracting. The sheer number of them in this book, especially with a list price of $8.00, is unforgivable. It's true: there is no "perfect" book, but if there is a publishing house behind the release of this one (which I will touch on momentarily), they should feel terrible about the product they are passing along to readers and make every effort to correct them ASAP.

2. The lies. I can understand that most books, especially tell-alls, are typically padded for salaciousness, but the lies in this book (and we're talking silly lies without a real point) are so disappointing it forced me to call into question almost all of DDD subsequent claims. In the foreword DDD says that there is a publishing house behind him on this project and that he has signed away all monetary gains from the publication of his story and in turn the publishing house has moved mountains to protect his identity, except when you look on the page for the book, the publisher is listed as DDD Publishing. ::scratches head, raises eyebrows, tilts head, looks sideways::

3. The ludicrousness of DDD's sexual ventures. Okay, whatever. Maybe I'm a prude, maybe I'm a bit too white bread...but there are some stories in this book that just don't pass the sniff test (as a woman, with woman parts, there is one in particular that made me cringe due largely to the perfectly impractical reaction of his female partner). I'll leave out spoilers, for the sake of those buying this book, but if you do read it you'll probably know what I'm talking about...

4. The convenience of the stories (wanted to be anonymous, had passed away, 'I didn't get your name...'). Yes, I did the math. If DDD has been sexually active for 8 years, that's equivalent to engaging a new partner every 2.9 days (roughly); yet he says he doesn't have sex with strangers (despite the stories he shared being about perfect strangers and their encounters...). And of those 1,000 people, not one has come forward to either confirm nor debunk his claims despite the press he's currently getting? He claims this is because he doesn't use the internet, but the internet isn't mutually exclusive, so I find this hard to believe...

The list goes on, but for me, the horse is dead and I'm hanging up my beating tool.

I have my suspicions on DDD...but it all just gut feelings. I think the book is well meaning, and if you can gloss over the errors and if you're not opposed to graphic sexual stories, there is some beauty in message: That 'we' are not tiny freak shows, that 'we' are human beings capable and deserving of love, that 'we' are perfect because of our imperfections. I simply have a hard time believing the messenger, and ergo, for me personally, the message was lost. I wish DDD well on his journey through humanhood and I hope he comes out on the other side of this okay. Call it my gut, but have feeling that after the glow comes the storm, as so happens in cases like this (A Girl's Guide to Homelessness, A Million Little Pieces)... there are a lot of smart people on the internet.

Not for everyone, but I loved it.

First off, I have never read any of DDD's AMA stuff. I found out about this book from a third part on Tumblr, looked like something I would enjoy and I did/do. Still not done, yes you can read it quickly, but I am taking my time to enjoy his sense of humor. He is an inexperienced author, but that is fine, he is telling you about his life and is telling it like a person sitting down with you over coffee. Very personal (VERY PERSONAL..) and very candid. DDD does not hold back and IMO the reader is given something more for it. Not for everyone, not for the prudish, conservative or just unwilling to experience life. DDD lays it all out for you to take or leave with no reservations or apologies. Truly an enjoyable read, wish he would do short stories though...

A separate chapter details the case of Haiti. The book ends with a critique of the implications of Caribbean nationhood from an anthropological perspective, stressing the ways that class, color and other social dimensions continue to play important parts in the organization of Caribbean societies.

Absolutely excellent

I purchased this cassette 2 years ago and am now replacing it; I listen to it A LOT! I find it easy to quote the statements/affirmations in many different situations in life (I have almost memorized them). The tape really does offer words of wisdom. I, unlike another reviewer, like the short statements, as varied as they are, rather than a continuous dialogue. Mr. Dyer states that the tape is designed this way, to pick out one idea at a time. I can listen to it over and over again, and still catch something I missed, or understood differently before. If you want to hear a postive message, if you want to retrain your thinking to a loving/positive mode, I can't say enough good about the message on this tape.

A Single Quote Can Transform Your Life

It seems amazing to think about how words can destroy or enliven our lives. One sentence can inspire a new direction and a phrase can transform your existence. When we are struggling with decisions it is often the wise words of a friend that saves us from making the wrong choice.

Dr. Wayne W. Dyer's thoughts have always been an inspiration to me and I see them as meaningful messages for a hurting planet. There is so much pain in life, but there is also the possibility of living in pure joy.

I still love thinking about this quote: "You are not a human being having a spiritual experience. You are a spiritual being having a human experience."

What an empowering thought.

This book is filled with inspiring ideas that refocus your attention on how things actually are instead of how you thought they originally should be. On the surface we may feel that we are drowning in life's challenges, but when you think of yourself as an eternal soul, problems melt away and you view your life from an eternal perspective. This doesn't mean that you don't deal with anguish and sorrow, but you deal with it from a new perspective. Life becomes a blink of the eye in the light of an eternal existence.

I love how Dr. Dyer explains forgiveness as an act of self-love because when you forgive you simply don't have to carry the problem around with you.

Dr. Dyer is really stating what our souls already know to be true. He just says everything so brilliantly. Lately, I've been contemplating his advice about loving those who are difficult to love. I am thinking about his statement about loving and his statement about "the more you give away, the more you get back."

A few of the quotes in this book made me laugh out loud. Dr. Dyer is not always serious and can actually be rather playful in his use of words.

Words can be used as powerful weapons to destroy or they can bring great beauty to our lives. I see beauty in Dr. Wayne Dyer's revelation of inner wisdom. I seem to think about his words at least once a day, especially when I start to think negatively. I am just a soul trying to live in this body that ties me to the earth. One day I won't live here anymore and it is empowering to think of myself as an eternal being temporarily in this school of life.

I'm working on this one! However lately I've noticed that my "invisible and silent" thoughts are being heard loud and clear. Although I still think our lives benefit from the power of the positive choice. Some thoughts magically transform your life without the addition of action, and some thoughts grow inside you and propel you forward into action.

If you think about it, spiritual teachers have been giving us the secret keys to inner wisdom throughout time. I think of quotes as keys. I can use them to open up new and unexplored territory in the areas of thought and spirituality.

Dr. Dyer has a lot of keys to free you from the prison of negativity.

Incredible!

This is a fantastic calendar. It is not year specific. You flip a page each day. Some days are good, and others are excellent. Some can change your whole attitude when life seems to be going the wrong way. One friend keeps wondering how the thoughts keep matching what she needs to hear at that time.
There is definately energy in this calendar that goes beyond the paper it is printed on.
I don't really care for daily calendars, and I have been using this one every day for at least 4 years now. Get it!

A Day at A Nude Beach

No question this is a well written story, about four girls going on spring break, and spend a day at a nude beach in Miami. Because two of the girls seem to have little control over their sexual organs, they are reprimanded by life guards for inappropriate behavior. If you have read Lana's work, you know squirting is not unusual, and to be expected. This is a full story, with lots of humor, and very credible.

Check the Publisher of this book before you buy

Crime and Punishment is one great novel. However, we have a bit of misleading marketing going on here. Make sure you're buying the version you think you're buying before you order. "Crime and Punishment" published by General Books LLC is a poor quality scanned in version. If you do the "Look Inside" thing on this book, you'll see the inside of another version of the book, NOT the one you will receive.

To give you a few quotes from the publishers website: "We created your book using OCR software ..... with up to 3,500 characters per page, even one percent can be an annoying number of typos.... After we re-typeset ... your book, the page numbers change so the old index and table of contents no longer work .... we usually remove them. .... Our OCR software can't distinguish between an illustration and a smudge or library stamp so it ignores everything except type. ..... We created your book using a robot who turned and photographed each page. Our robot is 99 percent accurate. But sometimes two pages stick together. And sometimes a page may even be missing from our copy of the book. .....". There's no manual editing whatsover.

You get the general idea. Unfortunately, books published by General Books LLC are named, seemingly intentionally, so that they have reviews associated with much better quality imprints. General Books LLC is an imprint of VDM Published (google them on Wikipedia), which is flooding Amazon with poor quality reprints and, unfortunately, many of them have the reviews associated with the original or with beter quality imprints associated with them.

Seems like it's Caveat Emptor on Amazon these days as Amazon certainly doesn't seem to be doing anything to protect it's customers from this Publisher.

Amazon needs to start recognizing the difference in translations

This is not the version of the book I clicked on! When you look at the (paperback) edition of Crime and Punishment translated by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, it says right below it, "Start reading Crime and Punishment on your Kindle..." and also lists the different versions available - paperback, hardcover, etc. - and includes a Kindle Edition. But when you click on either, you get this, which is a completely different translation. Pevear and Volokhonsky have been widely praised, their translations now considered far and away the best English versions available of various classic works of Russian Literature. But Amazon lumps everything with the same title as if it were the same product. Some of the customer-uploaded images of the book's cover even say that it is the Pevear and Volokhonsky version, but it is not. It's a 1914 translation by Constance Garnett.

This is the reason people started to hate big box and online bookstores when they first started putting neighborhood bookstores out of business -- because they don't seem to care about books, just making money. But what's funny here is that they could actually charge money for the better translation, since it's new, but instead they choose to give away an inferior version and pretend it's the same thing. (They do offer the Pevear and Volokhonsky version of Demons for a price - a version easier to distinguish because the newer translation even changes the title from the less-accurate The Possessed - versions with that title are available for free.) Also, because they don't distinguish between different translations, there is no button available under the Pevear and Volokhonsky version to request that the publisher make it available for Kindle.

It's also difficult to know what version of a book is being reviewed sometimes. I'll be reading reviews on the Kindle Edition page, and the reviewer will describe the fine leather binding. This is especially frustrating now that I realize the actual content - the language - of the book I'm buying could be different from the one I read about online.

Since getting my Kindle, I've been impressed by the machine itself, but thoroughly unimpressed by Amazon's handling of content. They should focus less exclusively on getting people to buy the device, and work harder at improving the way they sell books and other content for it.

A Classic for a Reason

I initially approached this book with a great deal of trepidation. I had never read Dostoyevsky, and was concerned that I would get bogged down in some lengthy, mind-numbingly boring, nineteenth-century treatise on the bestial nature of man or something. I am happy to report this is not the case. Instead, and to my delight, it is a smoothly flowing and fascinating story of a young man who succumbs to the most base desire, and the impact this has both psychologically and otherwise on himself and those around him.

To be sure, the book seems wordy in places, but I suspect this has to do with the translation. And what translator in his right mind would be bold enough to edit the great Dostoyevsky? But this is a very minor problem.

What we get with Dostoyevsky is dramatic tension, detailed and believable human characters, and brilliant insight into human nature. Early in the novel our hero meets and has a lengthy conversation with Marmeladov, a drunkard. This conversation is never uninteresting and ultimately becomes pathetic and heartbreaking, but I kept wondering why so much time was spent on it. As I got deeper into the book, I understood why this conversation was so important, and realized that I was in the hands of a master storyteller. This is also indicative of the way in which the story reveals itself. Nothing is hurried. These people speak the way we actually speak to one another in real life, and more importantly, Dostoyevsky is able to flesh out his characters into whole, three-dimensional human beings.

And what a diverse group of characters! Each is fleshed out, each is marvelously complex. Razujmikhin, the talkative, gregarious, good-hearted, insecure and destitute student; Sonia, the tragic child-prostitute, with a sense of rightness in the world; Petrovich, the self-important, self-made man, completely out of touch with his own humanity; Dunia, the honorable, wronged sister: we feel like we know these people because we've met people like them. They fit within our understanding of the way human beings are.

Dostoyevsky also displays great insight into human nature. Svidrigailov, for example, talks of his wife as liking to be offended. "We all like to be offended," he says, "but she in particular loved to be offended." It suddenly struck me how true this is. It gives us a chance to act indignantly, to lash out at our enemies, to gain favor with our allies. I don't believe I've ever seen this thought expressed in literature before. In fact, it never occurred to me in real life!

Petrovich, Dunia's suitor, not only expects to be loved, but because of his money, and her destitution, he expects to be adored! To be worshipped! He intentionally sought out a woman from whome he expected to get this, and is comletely flummoxed when she rejects him. His is an unusual character, but completely realized.

There is so much more to talk about: the character of Raskolnikov, which is meticulously and carefully revealed; the sense of isolation which descends on him after committing his crime; the cat and mouse game played on him by the police detective. I could go on and on. I haven't even mentioned the historical and social context in which this takes place. Suffice to say this is a very rich book.
Do not expect it to be a rip-roaring page turner. Sit down, relax, take your time, and savor it. It will be a very rewarding experience. And thank you SL, for recommending it.

About the Author
Mac Brunson is senior pastor of First Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Florida. He holds degrees from Furman University (B.A.) and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (M.Div., Ph.D.). Brunson and his wife have three children.

James W. Bryant is senior professor of pastoral theology at The Criswell College in Dallas, Texas. He holds degrees from Wheaton College (B.A.), and SouthWestern Baptist Theological Seminary (M.Div., Ph.D.). Bryant and his wife have two children.

A fine guide for ministers new and old

Bryant and Brunson have done ministers at all stages of development a great service in this book. I have taught ministerial ethics at university level for nearly twenty years. I now use this book as a text because the authors cover most of the matters I tried to hammer into ministry students over the years...and do it just as well as, if not better than, I.

They could have done better at a few points. Examples follow. First, their interpretation of "one-woman man" is deficient (pp. 55-56). Living in a culture that prohibits polygamy cannot automatically rule out that interpretation as an option. The same culture forbids murder, but that does not empty the mandate against murder of all meaning! Second, the remark that "it is the intimacy of the couple and not the ceremony that marks the beginning of marriage" (p. 144) should be tied more clearly to the discussion in which it appears. My students regularly misunderstand this as approval of premarital sex. Third, the writers misused Romans 11:29, a passage about the irrevocability of salvation, in an attempt to say a call to ministry is once and for all (p. 57). They may be right--although I am not sure they are--but they need another text on which to base their statement. Fourth, most ministers drive too many miles a year to make leasing a car a good option (p. 172).

All in all, however, the book offers tons of practical and valuable guidance! I recommend it highly.

Review of Guidebook for Pastors

The book is wonderfully writing. The information is very practical and useful to new and current pastors. Although both writers have pastored large mega churches the information is very useful and practical for the pastor of smaller churches. I wished I had the book two years ago when I began to pastor. However, I have known the authors and sat in classes with them. They live out the very things the book speaks about in their daily lives.
I will be giving the book to many of my friends in the ministry.

Shepherding the Pastor

A pastor leads as a shepherd, but who will lead the pastor? Certainly, in addition to God's spiritual calling, a pastor needs not only spiritual support, but also practical advice and resources for his ministry. The New Guidebook for Pastors accomplishes both. These two experienced pastors have not only influenced my spiritual walk, but have given me practical living- by- faith advice in my teaching ministry. Even though the book has much practical advice, including a valuable appendix and list of resources, the spiritual tone is never forsaken, and the reader learns much about theological doctrine and church organization, administration, counseling, missions, evangelism, and other areas of concern for both the clergy and the layman. Not only is the underlying spiritual call for the pastor emphasized, but also biblical support and case studies are given for each section. In addition to the introductory testimonies by reputable, experienced pastors in their specializations (worth the price of the book alone), the authors relate their own personal narratives and experiences in each section, serving as illustrations for each point being made. Both classical authors and contemporary authors of other books are quoted for advice, never forsaking God's Word as the center of their purpose. Although the book is written in a conversational tone to the reader, the academic depth is not ignored by the authors. Sometimes the authors have a bold statement that might alienate some readers in their tone, but they tell it like it is in the Bible: leave the ministry immediately if you are not called (p.32), or a preacher is not a pastor if he is divorced, but can still be a preacher or evangelist (p. 57). The reader should appreciate their candor and honesty in the book. Finally, the book serves as a history of guidebook advice for pastors and others, referencing at times the fantastic career of W.A. Criswell who wrote the original Guidebook for Pastors in 1980, but their book goes beyond where no other pastor has strayed, and hopefully will shepherd the pastor back home to God's calling and Word again. I am honored to know these authors personally and to be led by their own spiritual calling, reaching out to others through this fine book and resource for all those who desire to come to the Lord and do His will. The book will inspire generations of servants to come as well as my own students and my own spiritual growth.
