A Masterpiece

I don't know where to start. I've read "The Godfather" perhaps five times, yet it has taken me decades to pick up "The Fortunate Pilgrim." And what was the result? One of the most beautiful and quietly thrilling reading experiences I've ever had. I've always thought Puzo was an underrated writer, and bristled when he was casually insulted or referred to as a writer of pulp. "The Godfather" is in fact a great novel. But this gem, "The Fortunate Pilgrim" surpassed all my expectations. The writing is very simply poetic and masterly throughout. The style is gorgeously cinematic and seems to reflect the powerful vision of a boy growing up in Hell's Kitchen in New York who truly saw beauty all around him and who let it flood his heart. As I read this book, his vision of that beauty flooded mine. As for the character exploration, it is very simply magnificent. So deep does this novel go into the psyche of the women of this early twentieth century Italian immigrant family that it is nearly impossible to believe that a man wrote this, that he could open his mind and soul so totally to what these female characters suffered and saw and learned and knew. The male characters are no less exquisitely realized. And the world these people inhabited, with their disappointments, losses, hopes and dreams is here captured forever in these pages with exquisite and perfect skill. Over and over I underlined passages and phrases. Over and over I scribbled vocabulary in the back of the book. Such an achievement. --------- I have few regrets about my life but I will always regret that I never met Mario Puzo, that I never encountered him just for a few minutes at a bookstore so that I could tell him what "The Godfather" meant to me as a young writer. And now I miss the guy with all my heart. --- And I miss his generation and all that they witnessed and knew. How grateful I am that he gave us this small, perfect story, so carefully and lovingly crafted for all time.

Excellent Book!

Mario Puzo took the everyday life of an ordinary Italian immigrant family and turned it into a masterpiece! A treat for the reader. By the end of the book I felt like I know this family personally. His character depth is amazing. After reading this book I have a much better understanding of what my own grandparents went through when they came over from Italy. Living in today's world filled with conveniences, we tend to forget the struggles of the generations before us. I recommend this book to readers of all ages.

His Mother Took Over

Mario Puzo feels that this novel, written before THE GODFATHER or any of his more popular novels, is superior to them all. In a creative sense, THE FORTUNATE PILGRIM is the parent, and the rest of his books are the offspring.
In the hands of someone like Puzo, the creative process is a wonderful thing to observe. He relates how he set out to write a novel in which he was the hero and the rest of his family were villains who wanted to stifle his writing career; and how, stalwart young man that he was, he succeeded in spite of them and the stumbling blocks they placed in his path. He was unable to write this version of his life, not even as fiction. Truth and the memory of the strength of the woman who reared him wouldn't allow him to deny the impact she had on his life.
Puzo wrote, but not what he had planned, or even what he thought he was writing. At some point he realized that the book wasn't about himself. It was about his mother. THE FORTUNATE PILGRIM's Lucia Santa is the personification of Puzo's mother and this book is her book as surely as if she'd written it herself.
When we read about Lucia Santa's life in Hell's Kitchen, a single mother as we would call her today, as she raises six children, we are constantly amazed at her strength.
Her oldest son becomes a Mafia Union Organizer (read strong arm man and collector of "protection" money) against her will. But Lucia Santa prevails.
Her daughter spends six months in a sanitorium for her lungs and comes home too assimilated for Lucia Santa's taste. But Lucia Santa prevails.
One of her sons commits suicide. But Lucia Santa prevails.
One tragedy follows on the heels of another. But Lucia Santa prevails.
After the death of her son, her neighbors bewail her misfortunes, "First husband dead; second destroyed for life; a grown son, already a breadwinner, struck down. What tragedy, what misfortune!" But how does Lucia Santa look at it? A grown daughter, a forelady with a hard working sober husband. One son who has given her grandchildren and is making a good living. Another son working on the railroad and no longer giving her troubles. Yet another son winning awards in school. Yes, Lucia Santa prevails.
Lucia Santa is, in every way, Puzo's mother. Is it any wonder that she dominates this novel? The choice as to who was the hero (or heroine) was never really Puzo's to make. It's a better novel and a more honest one the way it wrote itself (with a little assist from Puzo).
Puzo says that, not only is this her novel, but so is THE GODFATHER. From his mother's mouth to Puzo's ears, to the written page, we have Lucia Santa to thank for these books. Oh, by the way, Mario, thanks for channeling them for us, the readers.

Worth the price of admission

Choosing a commentary is always a tricky thing - it mostly depends on what you need the commentary to do for you. Do you need a technical analysis of each Hebrew or Greek verb? Are you looking for syntactical analysis? Or, on the other end of the spectrum, are you looking for practical application and advice for modern living - something to bridge the cultural gap from the text to the modern day?

How you answer those sorts of questions will probably indicate which commentary is right for you.

I was very pleasantly surprised when I got into Iain Duguid's commentary on Esther and Ruth. I sort of expected a technical, heavy-handed type of commentary. I mean, what else would you expect from a "Reformed Expository Commentary"? We tend to major on the obscure and technical (or so it sometimes seems). What I found was an eminently readable book, which balanced the technical aspects with application. I also enjoyed that it was Christ-centered.

The book of Esther exhibits a surprising lack of mention of God. This detail has caused many to question how valid this book is as Scripture. Duguid handles this by explaining how those in Persia were actually still in rebellion against God. They hadn't returned under the decree of Cyrus. Apparently, they were too comfortable and well off under the Persian kings that they didn't want to return to a backwater land where life would be hard. Not too surprising, then, when trouble comes, they fast, mourn, wear sackcloth and ashes, but nobody prays.

While God seems out of the picture, he is still there. The whole story turns on the sleeplessness of the king - all Esther's bravery, all of Mordecai's refusal to bow, all of it turns out in favor for the Jews because the king couldn't sleep.

The book of Ruth also has some interesting turns. Duguid points out that Ruth is just as much about the Moabitess as it is about Naomi. Consistently, the author takes us from Boaz's fields to the house that Ruth and Naomi share. God has not given up on Naomi, no matter how difficult her circumstances seem. He first takes away her fullness in order to bring her back to the Promised Land. Then, through the unwanted concern of Ruth, he fills her back to the brim.

Unfortunately, both Esther and Ruth are relegated to women's Bible studies and aren't areas of study for the majority of the church. This does a disservice on both ends - first, it makes it seem as if these books have nothing to offer the whole congregation. Second, they are often skewed into morality tales for women - be an Esther or be a Ruth - as the principle message of each book. They have so much more to offer and it is my hope that Duguid's exposition will bring more people, both men and women, to these two valuable texts.

This commentary is thorough and relevant for all subsections of the church

This book was published by Iain M. Duguid in 2005. It is a commentary on the two books of the Bible.

The author did a wonderful job ferreting out some of the lesser known themes of these two books. He confidently proclaims aspects of the text that are often overlooked. He was not only able to find them, but, dissect and explain them.

Some readers may enjoy the frequent uses of popular culture the author implements to make points or comparisons. I often found it a little distracting, however, it did not detract from the overall readability of the book.

Duguid reviews both book separately and analyzes them chapter by chapter. He masterfully conveys the larger themes and the nuances. He revealed several concepts that this reader had never heard before. The writing style of Duguid makes this book useful as a study tool. He follows a chronological order and provides many points of discussion.

Duguid scrutinizes both books with an eye focused on reformed theology. He does a wonderful job of drawing on the reformed themes that are throughout the Bible. Sovereignty and grace are abundant in these two books.

This commentary is thorough and relevant for all subsections of the church. Duguid has provided a toll worthy of group study and individual review. Ruth and Esther are often mainstays in women' studies, and for good reason. The author reminds us that these two books are good for the instruction of both genders and all ages.

Fall in love with Esther and Ruth, AGAIN!

I love to teach the books of Esther and Ruth. They are fast paced, full of surprises, lots of intrigue and even a good dose of romance (Ruth specifically). I have so many commentaries on these two books and have my outlines already done and prepared for whenever any group wants to study the books.

Soooo, why did I buy another book on Esther and Ruth? That's easy, our senior Pastor is preaching through Esther this summer. He purchased some commentaries on Esther and just to make shipping costs reasonable he had the warehouse throw in this copy of Esther by Iain Duguid. He told me this was the greatest surprise of his life.

He said this book was worth the price of all the others combined. Well, it got my attention because I have never even heard of Iain Duguid.

I previewed the other Pastor's copy and was hooked from the opening chapter. I had to have my own copy. I ordered it and impatiently waited for it to arrive. I devoured the book as soon as I got it. I'm now and Iain Duguid fan.

He took a subject that I am familiar with and gave me new insights, new provoking thoughts to consider and shook some of my beliefs about the books to their roots. I will now be looking over my lesson plans and readdressing some areas, shoring up some thoughts and making huge improvements.

Thank you Iain for a very well done commentary. I enjoyed it so much I eagerly ordered Iain's commentary on Daniel.

If you are going to do a serious study of Esther or Ruth this book IS A MUST!

Very helpful!

This book is great - the authors are down to earth but not dumbed down, they are knowledgeable and intelligent but not so collegiate that you can't identify with them. They do really well, I think, in helping the reader understand the selections of literature they've chosen and challenging you to think out of the box. They do a great job defining the terms used in the study of literature / writing as well.

Solid Textbook

I spent a couple of semesters a while back teaching as an adjunct instructor at a university, and this was the textbook chosen by the department for the course. At first glance, I was disappointed with it. I just looked small, without much to work with.

Once the semester began, however, I began to see how high quality this book was. The selections are appropriate and interesting for the students, and the additional material--the explanatory notes, the writing samples, the questions--are really clear for the students. This book helped me to teach the class. And once I realized how high quality everything in it was, I was also happy at its small size. This was an affordable and convenient choice for my students to use.

After teaching for a year at that university, I moved on to other positions that used other textbooks. Every semester, though, I've found myself pulling "A Little Literature" back out, making copies from my students from it and consulting it for what literary choices it used to teach particular concepts. So, it was an excellent textbook and has since been a useful resource to me for several years.

It's alright.

Almost everything in this book is available in the public domain. You can just google the story and you'll be able to read it from there. It was fairly inexpensive, which is always nice, but from a teachers perspective, its not a book I would request for my classroom. There are better lit books out there.

In fact, it is the star of Perricone's "Three-Day Nutritional Face-Lift," a convincing trial run for those who are a bit hedgy about committing to his 28-day diet and his supplement, skin care, and exercise regimen.

Perricone's clear explanation about the adverse effects of inflammatory foods persuasively argues for shunning destructive, low-fat favorites (including watermelon, carrots, and bagels) and "culinary horrors" like pizza, pasta, and beef. Better to eat anti-inflammatory choices (those with a glycemic index of 50 or less) like salmon, halibut, and trout. While the book's mega list of recommended supplements is a bit hard to swallow (literally and figuratively), the supportive information Perricone supplies about each is certainly helpful.

Perricone (The Wrinkle Cure), a professor of dermatology at Yale Medical School, believes that relatively simple changes in eating can effect dramatic changes in physical appearance and well-being. He has created a month-long program broken up into daily menus as well as a more restrictive three-day regimen designed to produce immediate results. Perricone's guiding principle, which he explains in some depth, is to reduce inflammation at the cellular level, which, he believes, causes the skin to age and is also linked to degenerative disease. Perricone suggests that protein and some fat is essential for everyone. He is particularly keen on the benefits of fish. Certain foods high in carbohydrates cereals, breads, bananas are taboo in this plan because of their high glycemic index; they cause a spike in blood sugar and prompt the body's insulin response, which stores rather than burns fat and causes inflammation. Perricone also recommends an exercise regimen, and nearly a third of the book is devoted to a discussion of antioxidants, vitamin supplements and creams. Some may question his nutritional theories, and others may find the diet difficult to stick to, with its almost total restriction of starchy foods. Still, Perricone is a proponent of Barry Sears's The Zone, and readers who have followed that book and Perricone's own bestselling earlier volume will probably appreciate this one.

About the Author
Nicholas Perricone, MD, FACN, is a board certified clinical and research dermatologist. A brilliant scholar, Dr. Perricone completed medical school in just 2 1/2 years, graduating at the head of his class. He completed his internship in Pediatrics at Yale Medical School and his Dermatology Residency at Ford Medical Center. Dr. Perricone is regarded as the father of the Inflammation Theory of Aging. He is the author of the New York Times bestseller The Wrinkle Cure (Rodale Reach May 2000). Warner Books published the trade paper edition in May of 2001. It reached # 1 on both the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times bestseller lists March 24, 2002 and remained there for four weeks. Close to one million copies are in print. His PBS-TV special of the same name is one of the top fundraisers for Public Television.

Dr. Perricone is certified by the American Board of Dermatology, is a Fellow of the New York Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition. He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology and the Society of Investigative Dermatology. He is the recipient of the 2002 Eli Whitney Award, awarded annually to an outstanding individual for significant contribution to science.

Prior recipients include National Medal of Science recipient, Igor Sikorsky, (founder of Sikorsky aircraft) inventor of the first practical helicopter, which established the bedrock upon which today's helicopter industry rests, and Buckminster Fuller, inventor of the geodesic dome -- the lightest, strongest, and most cost-effective structure ever devised.

Dr. Perricone holds dozens of US and international patents for the treatment of skin and systemic disease, and for the use of topical anti-inflammatories for reversing and preventing damage to skin caused by age, the sun, the environment, hormonal changes, etc. He is the author of numerous scientific articles documenting the results of his research and is a contributing editor to the peer-reviewed medical journal Skin and Aging and is a member of the editorial board of Archives of Gerontology & Geriatrics. He is Chairman of the International Symposium on Aging Skin, an annual meeting in which researchers come together from around the world to share their latest scientific breakthroughs in the prevention of aging and aging skin.

Vogue magazine has named Dr. Perricone one of the top four dermatologists in the United States.

This book can change your life forwver!

I bought this book for a friend, but I have been following this life style for about ten years. I am now a quadriplegic and still remain healthy and progressing constantly. My skin is in great condition, as well as my overall energy, stamina and well-being. I am 61 years old, but don't look it or feel it. I highly recommend this book and suggest you buy used. So far I have bought three and all three are like new.

Science-based diet that really changes your appearance

I caught The Perricone Prescription video one afternoon on a public television station. After 5 minutes, I had grabbed a pen and was scribbling furiously. All of the skin, energy level and body issues he was describing were me! I ran out to the local supplement shop and bought some of the supplements he recommended and started taking them. I saw an almost immediate dramatic improvement in my skin, memory and energy levels just based upon a few notes on supplements from the program. I put the book on my wish list and FINALLY got it a year later.

The book and diet is based upon the premise that by stripping inflammatory 'toxins' from the diet and by beefing up the body with oils and substances that help it create healthy chemicals for the brain, skin and body, your skin and body undergo a 'makeover'. Although the whole makeover bit is appealing to many, in my opinion, it's simply your body 'getting healthy'.

The book is fantastic. If you're into having a healthier lifestyle and you want to know the ins and outs of why you should do certain things, this book is for you.

The ONLY down side is that the diet isn't as 'accessible' to those who aren't fully dedicated or able to throw themselves behind a diet like this. It takes more prep time than an ordinary meal in a busy household and there are a variety of ingredients.

That said, it isn't a reflection on the book. The book is well written with instructions and complete information on every topic it covers - including recipes. Even gleaning what I could reasonably use from this book has made a ton of difference in my life. I have a disorder that benefits from stripping inflammatory substances from my body and this diet did the trick. I very highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a 'change your body, change your life' type book.

I love this book. It is very informative. As a matter of factly...I had lent an original copy to my sister whom lost it. I was upset that she lost the book, so I just had to purchase myself a second copy! Very glad I did....Dr. Perricones' nutritional teachings and anti-aging informational is good as gold!

Good book, but way too short.

Not so much a book, but a long article. I think I read it in an hour.

There is a lot of good information in this book. I highly recommend it. I wish the book was longer. Also, some of the research subjects for the book were people who got into relationships decades ago. Seems not new relationships explored.

Still, at the end of the day, this book is a great kickstarter. I wish I'd read it before I got too deeply involved with a Thai woman.

For instance, Benjawan states that women care more about someone taking care of them than looks or age difference between girl and man (many Thai women are willing to go for a 20 year difference in marriage).

So, a woman is looking for financial security. For her, her kids, if she has any, and her parents.

She may also look for farang (foreigner) to pay off substantial debts.

The book is generalizations and some individual accounts from a Thai female's perspective. Not a bad way to get at least some input into the subject, as most Thai women don't seem so open about sharing their thoughts and ideas in writing. It's useful.
