Reasoning Backwards: Sherlock Holmes' Guide to Effective Problem Solving, by Gregg Young

American schools don't teach students how to solve problems, but ever since 2008, Japanese schools do. Fortunately for America, there are two strategies for solving problems, and the Japanese strategy reasons forward from cause to effect. They brainstorm root causes by asking, "What could be the root causes?" Then they start guessing, which is slow and ineffective. This approach rarely finds every root cause, so it rarely develops complete solutions. The better approach reasons backward from effect to cause, using Sherlock Holmes' strategy of observation and deduction. Problem solvers ask, "What is different when problems occur?" They observe the situation to discover clues that quickly identify every root cause, which leads to complete solutions. Reasoning backward is four times more effective than reasoning forward. This book introduces Holmes' strategy and these tools to students. For the first time, students can leave school prepared to be world-class problem solvers.

Backwards Thinking Works for Everything
By A Customer
Gregg Young has led problem-solving teams and trained others to solve problems
for over 30 years. In his thought-provoking book he explains in a clear and
compelling way the difference between two opposite strategies for problem
solving: reasoning forwards from cause to effect and reasoning backwards from
effect to cause. He claims that reasoning backwards is four times more effective. The
tools based on backwards reasoning are not well known in industry and scarcely
used in education. He gives numerous practical examples of how specific
problems were solved efficiently in the corporate world. From fixing product
defects to production glitches, he shows how thinking backwards increases odds
for success and saves time and money. The principles are universal, not just
limited to business and manufacturing. The magic of backward thinking is
affected by how issues are posed. For example, I am a scientist and just used
backward thinking to explain why people dream. Dreaming is an effect which
must have causes. I started with a host of wild guesses about why we dream and
pursued many blind alleys. Then I re-phrased the problem in a way that
expedited backward thinking: "Why do I always wake up in a dream?" The number
of possible causes for this effect was quite limited, and I got to the answer
in a few minutes. You can read all about that in my new book, "Atoms of Mind"
(to be released by Springer). The point is, no matter what kind of problem you
have, backward thinking can work -- big time!

Best Problem Solving Book Ever
By psxman
This book, while geared toward manufacturing processes will help develop anyone's ability to identify true causes and solve complex problems. The initial concepts presented require some basic problem solving awareness, but are extremely useful in teaching people how to efficiently work through problem solving. The basic concepts once learned by the reader, provide a foundation of simple steps that are easily taught to other problem solvers, which can quickly improve an organizations abilty to solve expensive problems. The latter chapters in the book will prove more complex as the reader should have some experience with designed experiments or more than a basic understanding of statistics, but the first half of the book is a must read for anyone working in an industrial or manufacturing environment.

When I first saw Reasoning Backwards, the sub-title, "Sherlock Holmes' Guide to Effective Problem Solving", intrigued me. I expected a book of exercises designed to help the reader think outside the box. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the book is focused on analytical tools to aid in solving a variety of problems in manufacturing and business.

After an introductory section on strategy and tactics, the author introduces sixteen unique problem solving tools. Each chapter begins with an overview, followed by several real life examples accompanied by charts and drawings, and a summary.

The examples are easily to understand and clarify the principles being introduced. I highly recommend this book.

Power of Peers: How the Company You Keep Drives Leadership, Growth, and Success, by Leon Shapiro, Leo Bottary

Birds of a feather flock together. We're all in the same boat. Great minds think alike. While just figures of speech to some, they reflect a simple truth--it's the company we keep that often determines the level of personal growth and professional success we achieve in life.  Business leaders exchange information and ideas. They network to make deals and build partnerships. They work together to optimize best practices, and they reach out to leaders outside their companies to accelerate growth. Simply put, CEOs and business leaders provide value to one another that they can't find anywhere else. In The Power of Peers, authors Leon Shapiro and Leo Bottary introduce peer advantage, a concept that transcends peer influence. This is what CEOs and business leaders experience when they are more selective, strategic, and structured in the way they engage their peers. Peer advantage gives CEOs the insights to compete and the courage to act. The Power of Peers features stories of business leaders from a range of industries to illustrate the five essential factors for peer advantage, how it impacts personal growth and why it has proven so effective in helping leaders identify future opportunities and challenges. It's what top, growth-oriented executives have relied upon for decades to be successful in business and in life.

Review

“True peer advantage is an experience like no other. The Power of Peers shows you how to achieve it.” – Marshall Goldsmith, #1 NYT best-selling author of Triggers, MOJO and What Got You Here Won’t Get You There

“There is no problem you can’t solve if you have a group of peers watching your back. The Power of Peers makes a powerful case for peer groups and shows how to structure them, allowing any leader to accelerate an organization's scaling up.” – Verne Harnish, founder of Entrepreneur's Organization (EO) and author of Scaling Up

“Shapiro and Bottary know their stuff. Their combined experience plus the examples cited in this book make The Power of Peers a valuable walk-through into the world of what peer organizations can do to improve your leadership and success skills.” – Chris Brogan, CEO Owner Media Group and NYT best-selling co-author of Trust Agents

“The Power of Peers gives voice to a concept that I have long witnessed to be true in business – learning from others who have had similar or related experiences holds incredible value. Business owners are at a disadvantage if they do not have a set of people surrounding them to provide both counsel and support. From my own experience as a co-founder of a company, a journalist, and member of a peer group, I can say that peer advantage is the real deal.” – JJ Ramberg, host of MSNBC's Your Business and co-founder of Goodshop

“In The Power of Peers, Shapiro and Bottary interview dozens of business leaders who tell a similar story to my own—that of seeking out a different kind of help from a group of peers—and in so doing provide a reasonable roadmap to help you learn what you just don’t know.” – Gini Dietrich, CEO of Arment Dietrich and author of Spin Sucks

“The Power of Peers provides a cogent and engaging explanation for why peer advisory groups work. So if you sit at the top of an organization or business and want to continually push your leadership and management performance to new levels, and do it in an environment that is supportive and fun, and yet hard-hitting and pragmatic, read this book.” – Craig Weber, author of Conversational Capacity and recipient of the Vistage Worldwide Speaker Of The Year award

“Peer influence is evident in every stage of our life. Kids follow their friends and mirror their older siblings. Teenagers group together in cliques that walk, talk, and dress alike. As we mature, we grow as individuals, yet our peers remain a powerful force in our lives. We’re all in this together. Whether it pertains to business or physical fitness, the more you surround yourself with peers who hold the same values and share the same goals, the more likely you are to accomplish those goals.” – Jesse Campanaro, CEO Total Gym

“When I started my first business, most, if not all, decisions were mine. Ultimately, the business prospered, but if I had had a trusted peer group to share ideas with, I’m certain we would have been far more successful. With The Power of Peers, Leon Shapiro and Leo Bottary take you on a thoughtful journey that redefines the old adage of “you are known (and far more successful) by the company you keep.” Read this book today and take action tomorrow, or you may look back years from now with just a bit of regret.” – Robert H. Thompson, author of The Offsite: A Leadership Challenge Fable, founder of LeaderInsideOut.com, and host of Robert Thompson’s Thought Grenades radio

By Karen Floyd
This is a MUST read for every business leader and budding entrepreneur. It provides tons of insight into the value of peer support with plenty of practical advice on how to leverage the benefits of peer advantage. There are lots of concrete examples of how business leaders flourished as individuals as a result of being part of a good peer group and how their businesses thrived with dramatic improvements. Quite incredible. It's extremely well written and a pleasure to read. I was so inspired that after reading it I signed up for a CEO peer group with CEO World.

Less lonely at the top
By Erika Andersen
The authors of The Power of Peers address a basic truth - it actually is lonely at the top, and it's difficult for vey senior people in organizations to find others who see them clearly, have their best interests, and will tell them the truth. Leo and Leon offer great advice, from their own experience, about how to build just such a supportive and honest peer group.

Word Drops: A Sprinkling of Linguistic Curiosities, by Paul Anthony Jones

From aardvark to zenzizenzizenzic, Word Drops collects a thousand obscure words and language facts in one fascinating chain of word associations. Did you know, for example, that scandal derives from the Latin for "stumbling block" and originally described a trap for a wild animal? In nineteenth-century slang a wolf trap was a corrupt casino. Casino means "little house" in Italian. Roulette means "little wheel" in French. A wheeler is someone who attends auctions to bid on items merely to increase their sale price. Such links take readers on an unexpected journey through linguistic oddities. Inspired by the popular @HaggardHawks Twitter account, Word Drops also uses an intriguing series of annotations to add background and historical context on everything from Anglo-Saxon cures for insanity to Samuel Pepys's cure for a hangover. This unique book will delight anyone who loves language, etymology, and word games.

Cast a spell of words on me.
By Stephen John Smoogen
I have followed Paul Anthony Jones and his friend Haggard's twitter account for a while which have been entertaining but due to the broken nature of twitter harder to see what the trends of thought that lead to various words being related. This book puts all those thought patterns down into a stream which I found enjoyable reading. [The person next to me at the airport thought my chortling at some of the phrases was praise enough that they said they were buying the book also. ]

So if you have a casual fascination of words and need to scratch an itch. [Haven't gotten to the word which means that yet.. but I expect it is there.] this book is for you.

A treasure trove of linguistic curiosities
By Phipedro
Sometimes the things you stumble across are the most worthwhile - though I didn't spot serendipity among the words covered here. It's a treasure trove of linguistic curiosities, some of which are familiar - but of course every reader will have their own subset of the familiar, while happily plunging into the vast amount of fresh material. The drops approach can be very addictive - not so much because of the links (there are one or two slightly implausible jumps) but because there's always another gem just over the page, or maybe the next page, and, hang on, I'll just read a couple more...

Society in America

I needed to receive this book for a summer college class that is only 5 weeks long. I was excited to get the book and start reading. However when I got the book, it was only the first 48 pages of a 365 page book. This did not help me in anyway and was a complete waste of money.

Review
“How to Have a Good Day is a smart, thorough, and eminently practical book. Just about every page offers a science-based tip to help you become better off — or, in many cases, just plain better.”
—Daniel H. Pink, author of To Sell is Human and Drive

"Behavioral science has come of age in recent years, and it has begged for a world-class translator. Now we have one. Caroline Webb’s peerless translation of the behavioral sciences into tools for shaping the quality of our day is the book we’ve been waiting for. Play with just 2% of the ideas in this book, and you might just end up changing your life's course. Words like 'magisterial' come to mind. Bravo."
—Tom Peters, co-author of award-winning bestseller In Search of Excellence

“Finally, a practical book based on evidence. How to Have a Good Day is grounded in state-of-the-art research on behavior and neuroscience, and animated with vivid examples from professionals who have successfully applied Webb’s advice. It might even leave you looking forward to your next tricky conversation or challenging task as an opportunity to try out her tips."
—Adam Grant, Wharton professor and New York Times bestselling author of Give and Take and Originals

"How to Have a Good Day is an extraordinary book — a wonderful mix of science, practical advice, and stories based on Caroline Webb's years of experience helping a huge range of people transform their professional lives for the better. Every chapter is studded with engaging real-world examples that ring true and illustrate how to make the most of the book's suggestions. Whatever your personal definition of a good day, you'll have more of them after reading this book.”
—Susan Cain, author of Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking and co-founder of Quiet Revolution

"Almost all of us work in environments where our time is stretched far too thin. How to Have a Good Day helps us rise to that challenge, containing ideas and techniques that show us how to be at our own personal and professional best every day."
—Tony Hsieh, New York Times bestselling author of Delivering Happiness and CEO of Zappos.com, Inc.

"Webb has given us a great gift: she has synthesized all the advice coming out of labs around the world, filtered it for quality, and illustrated it with well-chosen examples. The appendices alone will save you dozens of hours per year — particularly on email — and help you create more great days for yourself. This is the only self-improvement book you will need in the next five years."
—Jonathan Haidt, NYU-Stern School of Business, author of The Happiness Hypothesis and The Righteous Mind

"There's a big difference between having a great, productive day and having a bland, ordinary one. Caroline Webb deftly explains how to squeeze the most out of twenty-four hours, to create more of the former. Very useful."
—Sir Michael Moritz, Chairman of Sequoia Capital

“A powerful toolkit to improve both work and wellbeing. From email and meetings to making the most out of every day, Webb shows us not just how to be more productive, but how to be more fulfilled along the way.”
—Jonah Berger, Wharton professor and bestselling author of Contagious and Invisible Influence

"Imagine what your life would be like if you could simply 'choose' to have a good day. Webb makes a powerful case that we can. Best of all, she shows us how. Webb gets her arms around the vast body of information coming at us from behavioral economics, psychology, and neuroscience, and distills the best of it into the kind of practical advice a wise friend might offer. It's the book Daniel Kahneman might write if he'd been working in the business world for twenty years. Masterful."
—Douglas Stone and Sheila Heen, co-authors of the bestselling Difficult Conversations and Thanks for the Feedback

"This is a brilliantly useful book. Caroline Webb has a quite exceptional range of organisational experience. She uses it to review a vast span of the latest academic 'thinking about thinking' in the clearest possible way. And then she applies this wisdom to help us all sort out the frazzle of our own working day. Her approach is utterly straightforward but based in deep insights into how human beings really behave."
—Peter Day, BBC Business Correspondent, Presenter of In Business and Global Business

“Years ago I was a rower, and in sport everyone knows you need to pay attention to yourself, your intent and your mindset, to be at your best. This book reminded me of all I learned from those days about the importance of having the right attitude. I found it a great, practical guide to applying these and other helpful psychological insights in business – something we do all too infrequently. Built solidly on the latest research, brought to life with storytelling, it offers many simple ways to boost your performance and give you a better day at work – and if you’re a leader, it will show you how to make sure that your colleagues are on top form, too."
-—Matt Brittin, President of Google Europe, Middle East & Africa, former rowing World Championship medalist and British Olympic team member

"How to Have a Good Day speaks to every area of your workday and shows how making a few critical adjustments to your everyday behavior will leave you amazed by the results. By applying the lessons in Webb's book, all based on science, you’ll maximize your performance and be more energized than ever."
— Marshall Goldsmith, bestselling author of Triggers, MOJO and What Got You Here Won’t Get You There

“An absolute must read for the millions of people struggling to overcome the challenges and stresses of work and family life. Caroline Webb’s deep dive into ground-breaking new behavioral and neuroscience research gives us the tools to empower everyone to have a better, more fulfilling day, every day. Finally, we can say, ‘Good morning,’ and mean it!”
—Linda Kaplan Thaler, Chairman of Publicis Kaplan Thaler and co-author of Grit to Great

“The quest for self-improvement usually takes place on a well-trodden path, with many different gurus offering guidance. But the advice, in addition to being contradictory, often lacks solid foundations. Fortunately, How to Have a Good Day is the breakout exception to this category. The evidence and examples packed inside its pages leave the reader in no doubt that Webb's advice will make a real difference.  Better days lead to better lives, and this extraordinary book will lead to both.”
—Chris Guillebeau, New York Times bestselling author of The $100 Startup and The Happiness of Pursuit

“In How to Have a Good Day, Caroline Webb offers practical advice rooted in the latest science and psychology for anyone who wants to take a more intentional approach to life and enjoy the greater productivity and success that comes from doing so. If you want to stop reacting to your life and start living it, this book will get you moving in the right direction."

The everyday epiphany.
By timothy d fisher
For those of us without the time, means, or gumption to hire a career/life coach, there is help. Profound, tangible, and accessible help from this book. And blessedly, it requires little heavy lifting on our part. It turns out, the ways we get in our own way, the procrastinating, time-wasting, goal-sabotaging, can be squelched. While we’ve been suffering, a small army of academics has been figuring stuff out. It might in how our brains function, our evolutionary tendencies, or the habits (good or bad) we pick up.

To be clear on what “How to Have a Good Day” is not: it requires no deep plumbing of the psyche, it pushes no “alternative” way of thinking. The topics are well known. We all know procrastination is bad, we may know multi-tasking is a fallacy. But why? And what can I do about it today? The author, professional career coach, researcher, and reader of 600(!) books on the topic of behavioral science, has distilled the best, most illuminating discoveries to help those of us who know better, but can’t do better. As declared in the title, yes, there is a measure of science-talk, but this is no science text. HTHAGD kicks off with an introductory primer on the concepts in play. Yet rest assured any haughty terminology has been thoroughly humanized, without being cerebrally neutered. Though even the author allows the book is navigable even if you skip chapter one.

The remaining chapters drill down on seven topics, such as productivity, resilience, etc. Each topic is loosely pegged to a real individual’s overcoming of their respective obstacle (e.g. priorities). Webb threads in the most revelatory science and explains why this subject’s course of action worked. She then details the actionable things we can do (a specific breathing technique, a check-list, a mantra, and so on) to bring into our day. All the “tips” are packaged at the end of the chapter. So indeed, the book is built to be revisited by topic, say, two years from now on your worst day ever at work.

An exhaustively comprehensive Rx for our everyday challenges. At once probing of our mental innards, and plainly, wonderfully practical. We know it does us no good to have another wasted day. With this book, we need no longer search in anguish for what to do about it. Fantastically beneficial from the first sit-down.

Extremely useful to everyone
By Neal Reynolds
I suggest that, whatever your work situation, you read Caroline Webb's book thoroughly and then leave it on a table where you can pick it up and review some of the material in it at any time. The 21 chapters are divided into seven parts: PRIORITIES--Setting Intentional Direction and Focus for Your Day; PRODUCTIVITY--Making the Hours in Your Day Go Further; RELATIONSHIPS--Making the Most of Every Interaction; THINKING--Being Your Smartest, Wisest, Most Creative Self; INFLUENCE--Maximizing the Impact of All You Say and Do; RESILIENCE--Sailing Through Setbacks and Annoyances; ENERGY--Boosting Your Enthusiasm and Enjoyment. All this is prefaced by an introduction giving us THE SCIENCE ESSENTIALS. Then there's a postscript: Making It Stick, and three appendixes: A--How to Be Good at Meetings; B--How To Be Good at Email, and C--Reinvigorating your Routine. Plus there's Suggested Further Reading, a helpful Glossary, and Notes.

The book as a whole is more applicable to those in desk and managerial jobs, but the key points can be adapted by, for instance, dishwashers, mail carriers, security officers, whatever. Actually, even a retired person such as myself will find a lot of useful material here.In fact, I would think even high school and especially college students would find a lot of food for thought here.

The writing is fairly informal, person to person. It's quite easy to read and learn from. I earnestly recommend this to just about everyone.

Wow. Absolutely packed with good info.
By Ladybug
Caroline Webb has managed to write a heavily researched, evidence-based manual that can be helpful to just about anyone. Which probably makes it sound horribly boring, but it really isn't!

Most of the book is written for people who work--at the top or the bottom of the food chain, it doesn't matter. But even I, as a stay-at-home mom and writer, found plenty in here to apply to my life. Webb's tone is very conversational, and while the content is dense, she manages to inject levity and humor often enough that I never felt bogged down.

The book is divided into seven parts. In a nutshell, these parts address:

1) Setting your intentions
2) Organizing your self and your life in a more strategic way
3) Making the most of your relationships (this is BY FAR my favorite section, holy smokes)
4) Being your best, most insightful self
5) Maximizing your impact
6) Increasing your resilience
7) Boosting your energy.

As I mentioned, my favorite section, hands down, is the section about building relationships. I thought Webb offered so much good stuff here, I was blown away. Some of my favorite insights from Webb:

(*) Nobody ever experiences an entirely objective version of reality (and this is what leads to misunderstanding). This may seem like an obvious point, but the scientific explanation behind this is fascinating.
(*) Webb's advice on how to give a "positive no" (basically delivering disappointing information with positivity and warmth) is life-changing, in my opinion. I've already put this one into practice and seen great results.
(*) Along the same lines, I also love Webb's strategies for diffusing tense situations and delivering difficult information with kindness, clarity, and tact.

And even still, there is so much more to this book. How to Have a Good Day offers plenty of helpful insight into the nature of human interaction and the science behind why we act the way that we do, that I really believe there is something in here for everyone. It's not a book to rush through, so take your time with it. It will be worth the effort.

Also, if you do enjoy this book, I'd also recommend Unfinished Business: Women Men Work Family.

Found late in my career, but not to late!
By Chris P. Kunicki
I have been consuling for 10 years. About 4 years ago I stumbled across this book. I bought it principally because I was going on a trip and needed something to read, I had no expectations. I was surprised to find a wealth of advise that I really needed to bring my consulting to the next level. Issues such as: Setting value based fees, building relationships, dropping the lower end of the business to make room for bigger opportunities and importance of self promotion through publishing & speaking.
The other thing I enjoyed is that Alan presents consulting as an honorable trade that can really help effect change and growth for our customers. If your a consultant, you should read this book! At a minimum your guaranteed to find a few useful points.

For the Lone Wolf
By A Customer
I enjoyed this book. As other reviewers have pointed out, a lot of
the advice given is just good ol' common sense for the professional
service provider in general (I can easily see some of the tips given
here being used by lawyers, accountants, etc to sell their services to
business). Plus, the idea of moving from hour-based billing to
value-based billing is invaluable. As a sole practioner, you can only
bill so many hours a day... but if you can add value and charge for
the value added... "ah, there's the rub." Alan Weiss here
provides a clear sense of the mechanics and operation of your typical
small professional services firm, with a well-written emphasis on
customer retention and relationship marketing.

Weiss gives no advice on growing a
practice into an organization that will outlive its founders. There
is only advice on improving your personal bottom line. In fact, after
reading it, I realize Weiss's formula for making a million is simple:
generate business revenues in excess of a million and keep expenses as
low as possible so that you can pocket the rest as dividends and/or
salary. That works fine for the individual practioner S corp / sole
proprietor, but what if you are already in the consulting business and
you are looking for ways to grow, add new services, increase firm
reputation, or otherwise move away from the lone wolf image? Taking a
million in dividends out of your practice each year doesn't leave much
for growth or future investment. What Weiss doesn't tell you is that
consulting (as opposed to public speaking, a distinction Weiss
sometimes forgets) is subject to economies of scale. That is why
formerly one-person shops like McKinsey are now huge global firms. Is
it better to run your own shop for 20 years, withdrawing all excess
earnings as dividends to support your lavish lifestyle or is it better
to reinvest most of those earnings by adding new services, increasing
clients, hiring more top-notch staff so that by the time you are ready
to retire, your firm is worth $30 million based on expected future
cash flows? Weiss wrote this book for the former, and gives little
advice on how to achieve the latter.

Excellent. Relationship selling and value pricing.
By A Customer
I guess the book can be summarised as having one underlying strategy of becoming a million dollar consultant, with many tactics in order to get there. Relationship selling is one tactic that is explained in depth because it is so different to the way most people sell. Value pricing is the other main tactic in obtaining this status. This books touches on so many aspects of consulting it is difficult to summarise everything. If you want to know how to start a new consulting business, how to set up an office, what equipment you should buy, how to market yourself, which groups you should join, how to work with and recruit sub-contractors, how to allocated project revenue between sub-contractors, planning, down to some ethical decisions, the book covers them all. If you want to become a well known speaker, writer or well know industry expert, this book discusses the tactics to get there. The one thing this book does not do, is tell you it is easy. To achieve these goals, takes dedication and persistence even during the tough times. What do you do when you are down to your last few dollars? Sell the furniture? No, there are even tactics to deal with this situation. I would recommend this book to all consultants and sales people. The consultants will get the most out of the book, and the sales people will learn a lot about relationship selling that is sadly lacking in most of the sales people I know.

Amazon.com Review
"A thousand miles ago, in a country east of the jungle and south of the mountains, there lived a firework-maker called Lalchand and his daughter, Lila."

Lila, the heroine of Philip Pullman's charming fable, was, as a baby, "a cross little thing, always crying and refusing her food, but Lalchand built a cradle for her in the corner of the workshop, where she could see the sparks play and listen to the fizz and crackle of the gunpowder." Once out of her cradle, she showed a marked talent for pyrotechnics, even inventing her own fireworks with names like Tumbling Demons and Shimmering Coins. Nevertheless, when Lila tells her father she'd like to become a master firework-maker, he's shocked. Firework-making is no job for a girl, he tells her; besides, with her burned fingers and singed eyebrows, he's afraid he'll never be able to find a husband for her.

If Lalchand is horrified by Lila's ambitions, his daughter is equally appalled by the prospect of a husband. Instead, she decides to run away to Mount Merapi, where every firework-maker must go to claim some of the royal sulphur from Razvani the Fire-Fiend. Lila's adventures on the road to Merapi alternate with those of her best friend, Chulak, and his talking white elephant, Hamlet, who set out after her when they learn something that could mean life or death for Lila. Along the way, they meet pirates, wild animals, and supernatural beings of every stripe until, at last, Lila must face the scariest obstacle of all: her own fear. Pullman invests The Firework-Maker's Daughter with wit, wonder, and more than a few goose bumps. The charm of the prose is reflected in the black and white illustrations by S. Saelig Gallagher that punctuate this slim novel. Though not as sophisticated as Pullman's remarkable fantasy novels The Golden Compass and The Subtle Knife, this engaging story does share a courageous heroine, an exciting adventure, and a singular philosophy that ties everything together in a deeply satisfying denouement. (Ages 9 to 12) --Alix Wilber

From Publishers Weekly
This comical adventure about a girl who longs to follow in her father's footsteps crackles with Pullman's (The Golden Compass; Clockwork) usual flair. Lila desperately wants to be a firework-maker like her widower father. Although he has raised her amid the dancing sparks, he wants her to have a husband rather than a vocation. With the help of her entrepreneurial friend Chulak, the personal servant to the king's talking white elephant, Lila tricks her father into revealing the secret to his profession, then bravely departs to retrieve the royal sulphur from Razvani the Fire-Fiend at the heart of a volcano. Pullman marries elements of fairy tale with slapstick humor as Lila outwits a vaudevillian band of pirates and scales jagged mountains on her quest. Gallagher's (Blue Willow, reviewed above) softly focused graphite drawings lend magical mystery as Lila fearfully contemplates the dancing fire imps at Mount Merapi and emphasize the absurdity as the elephant, his flanks emblazoned with advertisements, kneels before the Goddess of the Lake in order to save Lila from Razvani. If the tale, first published in Britain in 1995, isn't as polished as Pullman's other works, it's worth the trip just for the climactic fireworks scene in which Lila gets to show her stuff. Ages 8-12. (Oct.) FYI: As of September, Pullman's Sally Lockhart Trilogy is being reissued in paperback: The Ruby in the Smoke; The Shadow in the North; and The Tiger in the Well; as well as The Tin Princess, which features characters from the trilogy. From Library Journal
Grade 3-6-A story set "A thousand miles ago" and very far away. Having grown up amid the clutter and creations in her firework-maker father's studio, Lila wants only to follow in his footsteps, but Lalchand thinks more of finding a husband for his daughter. Since he won't see things her way, Lila enlists the aid of her friend Chulak, keeper of the king's (talking) white elephant Hamlet, to help her find out what she needs to complete her apprenticeship and become a master firework-maker. Chulak learns that the final test is to obtain the royal sulfur from the Grotto of Razvani the Fire-Fiend, and Lila runs away to do this, before Chulak finds out that it takes more than determination to accomplish this quest. Now Lila's life is in danger, from more than the bumbling pirates who kidnap her along the way, and it is up to Chulak and Hamlet to find her before it is too late. Stately but expressive graphite drawings open each chapter and, along with decorated title and half-title pages, add to the expanded folktale feel of this story. This title is similar in length and probable audience to Pullman's Clockwork (Scholastic, 1998); however, where that book used horror and suspense to rivet readers to the page, this one will be remembered for its broad humor and gentle moral featuring a determined girl who reaches her goals through hard work, courage, and perseverance. Young readers will see, hear, smell, and be dazzled by the fireworks that burst forth, as Lila earns her heart's desire.

Another delightful tale from Philip Pullman
By Jennifer Mo
Philip Pullman never ceases to amaze me with his versatility-- from the complex His Dark Materials series, to his gothic (and surprisingly funny) Count Karlestein, to the creepy Clockwork... The Firework-Maker's Daughter is different from anything I've read by Pullman before, and yet it possesses his trademark wit. Short and aimed at a younger audience, The Firework-Maker's Daughter is nonetheless a lot of fun for even older readers. Lila and her various friends and types of fireworks are absolutely charming. While Pullman's tone is decidedly more satirical than Lloyd Alexander's, if you liked either Alexander's quest-type books or Philip Pullman's other works, you'll enjoy this one.

An engaging short book with wonderful language!
By A Customer
I read this book to my 2 kids (7 and 10) and they loved it! The tale is an engaging, not too- predictable story of a girl who wants to follow her father's trade. There is much rich langugage and a variety of characters all neatly brought together and woven into the story. There is much imagination and wry wit. If you are looking for a fairly short (just over 100 pages) slightly fantasy/fiction book for your kids, give this one a try!

Explosive!
By A Customer
I loved the cast of colourful characters that fill this book. I think my favourite was uncle Rambashi - the failed chicken farmer and part-time pirate. An engaging story with a strong female protagonist - explosive!

Why School?: How Education Must Change When Learning and Information Are Everywhere (Kindle Single), by Will Richardson

Traditional educators, classrooms, and brick-and-mortar schools are no longer necessary to access information. Instead, things like blogs and wikis, as well as remote collaborations and an emphasis on 'critical thinking' skills are the coins of the realm in this new kingdom. Yet the national dialogue on education reform focuses on using technology to update the traditional education model, failing to reassess the fundamental design on which it is built.

In 'Why School?,' educator, author, parent and blogger Will Richardson challenges traditional thinking about education — questioning whether it still holds value in its current form. How can schools adjust to this new age? Or students? Or parents? In this provocative read, Richardson provides an in-depth look at how connected educators are beginning to change their classroom practice. Ultimately, 'Why School?' serves as a starting point for the important conversations around real school reforms that must ensue, offering a bold plan for rethinking how we teach our kids, and the consequences if we don't.

A very different (and needed) vision for schooling
By Scott McLeod
Why School? is a superb summary of why schools need to be different. We now live in a world where the rule is abundance, not scarcity. Where teachers are from all around the world, not just in those buildings down the street. Where students can make and do and share, not just sit passively and regurgitate.

There are lots of insights in this short text. I read the entire book in a sitting of an hour or two. But the ideas within will last much, much longer...

A few quotes to whet your appetite:

1. "let's scrap open-book tests, zoom past open-phone tests asking Googleable questions, and advance to open-network tests that measure not just if kids answer a question well, but how literate they are at discerning good information from bad and tapping into the experts and networks that can inform those answers. This is how they'll take the real-life information and knowledge tests that come their way, and it would tell us much more about our children's preparedness for a world of abundance."

2. "Discovering the curriculum changes the teacher's role in the classroom. It becomes less about how well the teacher develops the lesson plan and what that teacher knows (though those ingredients are still important). Instead, they must inspire students to pursue their own interests in the context of the subject matter. Teachers need to be great at asking questions and astute at managing the different paths to learning that each child creates. They must guide students to pursue projects of value and help them connect their interests to the required standards. And they have to be participants and models in the learning process."

3. "'How do your teachers learn?' Most answers I get follow along traditional lines: 'They go to conferences.' 'They take after-school workshops.' 'They read books.' They see their teachers' learning as an event, not an ongoing process."

4. "We saved every bit of paper that came home in the Friday Folders that year, and they grew to a three-foot-high stack in the corner of our bedroom. It was an impressive collection of stuff that my kids never again looked at once it was added to the stack. Countless hours spent filling in those worksheet blanks, working those test problems, finishing off those projects, and Tess and Tucker had literally zero investment in any of it after their grades and our signatures were in place. Zero."

5. "I'd articulate the shift to teachers like this: Don't teach my child science; instead, teach my child how to learn science -- or history or math or music. With as many resources as they have available to them today (not to mention what they'll have tomorrow), kids had better know how."

Make school different. Start by reading this book. I've already ordered multiple copies as gifts for colleagues, friends, and family members, with plans to expand the circle even further. If you like this book - and you will - do the same for your own circles. And then start talking with each other about what school could (and should) be.

[Now if I only could get legislators to read this!]

A Clear Vision Indeed
By Book Shark
Why School?: How Education Must Change When Learning and Information Are Everywhere by Will Richardson

"Why School?" is an inspirational plea to a new vision of education that incorporates tools of learning that are all around us. The author's contention is that the current educational system does not adequately provide what our kids need to know and thus doing school "differently" is necessary. Educator, blogger and author Will Richardson, provides the reader with a brief different vision of doing school. This stimulating brief 51-page book is broken out into two main parts: Part I: Old School and Part II: New School.

Positives:
1. Brief and to the point.
2. An important topic, a "different" education.
3. A brief book that is intended to inspire and whet your appetite. Mission accomplished.
4. The impact of abundance of information and how it relates to education.
5. A look at the old educational model and why it fails in preparing children for future success in a fast-changing world.
6. A policy paper by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) that lists the new set of 21st-century literacies for all readers and writers.
7. The contrast between the two very different visions for educational change. The first is about doing what we currently do "better". The second requires a fundamental revision of the value of school and the roles of teachers and classrooms.
8. Interesting and thought-provoking arguments, "What they don't tell you, by the way, is that we just looked at test results from U.S. kids living in high-income homes, we would be first in the world in just about every category. Our scores reflect our very deep issues with poverty, not inherent problems with schools."
9. The importance of discovery over delivery in education. "It's a kind schooling that prepares students for the world they live in, not the one in which most of us grew up."
10. The objectives and goals of the new school approach. The approach the steps to take.
11. The problems with standardized tests.
12. The six unlearning/relearning ideas for educators.

Negatives:
1. No formal bibliography or links to websites or blogs to access from Kindle.

In summary, this turned out to be quite an inspirational and compelling plea for a new approach in education. The author does a wonderful job of providing compelling arguments for a new or "different" vision of education. This brief book is quite quotable and the essence of it will stick with me. "Don't teach my child science; instead, teach my child how to learn science..." If you are looking for an educational appetizer, this is a sweet treat indeed. I highly recommend it!

Needs more data
By Mec
The author's thesis is that education should be more open-ended: students should be more involved in choosing their goals; school work should require more skills than "look up facts on the Interent"; and, underneath it all, school should be arranged to bring out more engagement and commitment in students.

I like these ideas, but this essay did not support them well. It's long on rhetoric, tagging the approaches the author doesn't favor with negative descriptions and the approaches the author does favor with positive descriptions. And it's short on data. It's even short on anecdotes: there are only a handful of stories about students learning the "new way" and their projects. And the first, longest such story is about a student learning to play Minecraft -- that's not very appealing!

The thesis is fine, but more data, please.
