Entrusted with secret Admiralty orders, he heads south, but once the ship enters the freezing waters of the Southern Ocean, a series of devastating events occur and threaten to jeopardise his mission. For Captain Quintrell, the mumblings of a near mutinous crew, sabotage, murder most foul, and the dangers held within a simmering volcanic island, pose as much of a threat as a broadside from a French man-of-war.

About the Author
Born in England, Margaret Muir now lives in Tasmania where she is a member of the Tasmanian Sail Training Association. During her travels, she has cruised round the coast of South America, crossed Drake Passage and visited the frozen islands off the Antarctic Peninsula. It is these experiences which inspired her to write Floating Gold. Floating Gold is Muir's fifth novel for Hale Books, but her first nautical fiction adventure. Wait for the movie -- Patrick O'Brian this ain't

This book reads like a treatment for a motion picture. The author does a great job describing the various "sets" on which the action takes place, whether it be on shipboard, or a remote island that figures prominently in the story. Where everything falls apart is with the characters.
The reader doesn't care about any of them or what becomes of any of them. Young man Will's grandfather is gravely injured in a shipbuilding accident, but Will runs to retrieve the small boat he was building and ends up floating out to sea, picked up and impressed into service aboard HMS Elusive as she is leaving port. No angst. No regret. No introspection into the unfairness of it all, nor worry over the fate of his badly bleeding grandfather. Months later, Will gets lashed for insubordination, but a page later it's as though it never happened. No pain, no suffering, no recrimination, no healing process. Wow. He's superman and can return to his duties after twelve lashes without a wince. Now who among us can do that?
Captain Quintrell leaves behind a wife who irritates him (why?), visits a mistress whom we learn nothing about, and shows no emotion or motivation at all. Exceedingly proper for a sea captain in front of his men, but we're the readers -- we're supposed to be let in on his self-doubt, goals, ideals, sleeplessness, self-recrimination, etc., and it is just not there. Second-in-command Parry also remains an enigma. The author just gives no emotional tags to the characters upon which a reader can cling.
Further compounding the problem is the failure to capture the tone and cadences of the times. (An area of strength for Patrick O'Brian which his fans adore.) Yes, the author sprinkles in the appropriate nautical terms, and uses forms of expression obviously researched from the time. But they stand out glaringly from the rest of the work, being inserted merely to try to authenticate the time period. The reader is jerked from the flow of the story by their insertion in otherwise modern speech because it is so obvious that was why they were inserted.
Wait for the movie. It will make a great action/adventure movie.

A Mysterious Treasure Hunt During an Uneasy Peace

Margaret Muir's new novel, Floating Gold, is a wonderful blend of classic Georgian naval fiction, a mystery/thriller and a grand treasure hunt. A rousing tale, well told.
Captain Oliver Quintrell is on the beach, both literally and figuratively. Recently released from Greenwich Hospital after recovering from injuries related to a "direct contact with a four pound cannon ball," he finds himself without a commission in a world briefly at peace following the signing of the Treaty of Amiens in 1802. He is therefore pleased to be given the command HMS Elusive, a frigate on a secret mission with sealed orders bound for an island near the bottom of the world. Along the way they encounter storms, calm, murder, and sabotage until they finally arrive at an island near the bottom of the world, which itself may be the greatest threat of all to survival of the ship and crew. Hidden on the island is a vast, yet mysterious treasure that Captain Quintrell, his officers and crew must find and carry back to England.
The story is told from the viewpoint of Captain Quintrell and Will Ethridge, a young apprentice shipwright, who arrives aboard the Elusive quite by accident. The shift in perspective balances the world aft and forward of the mast nicely. All of the characters will be familiar to readers of naval fiction and yet felt fresh and individual.
Margaret Muir is no stranger to square-rigged ships and it shows in her writing. The scenes aboard ship feel right. They have an authenticity in the small idiosyncratic details she deftly adds. Muir has also visited the mysterious and dangerous island that plays such a central role in the story. Her background and travels help bring the novel together, giving a sense of reality to the fantastic scenes she describes.
Floating Gold is well a paced and vividly drawn tale of adventure in the high latitudes and on the high seas. Highly recommended.

Anyone who knows me will know I devour anything with a Tall Ship theme--so I was excited to receive Floating Gold. Here is an example of how authors who, for one reason or another, no longer have their books in print with a mainstream publisher, decide to self-publish. Margaret Muir used to be published by Robert Hale, but with a backlist out of print, she decided to publish her books herself to keep them alive and in circulation. Good for her!
Floating Gold is a Georgian treasure hunt adventure. It is 1802 and there is a tentative peace between France and England. Captain Oliver Quintrell, as with many a sailor during times of peace, is ashore with no command and nothing to do. When he is offered HMS Elusive and a secret mission, he jumps at the chance to accept. He is bound for the Southern Ocean with secret orders, and his crew encounter storms, murder, and various adventures on the long voyage south. They reach their destination--and the treasure hunt proper begins.
The author knows her ropes when it comes to ships and shipping: the ship-board scenes are accurate and give a real feel of being at sea; her characters are believable--and the action, vigorous.
My only comment is that the edition I received had been incorrectly typeset with double spacing between paragraphs. While this in no way detracted from the story, it did spoil the look of an otherwise superb book--I believe it has now been re-typeset though, so all new editions reach full mainstream quality.
Had Floating Gold not been a republished, previously mainstream novel, I would have made this my editor's choice. HNS rules state books must be newly published, however. So very highly recommended must suffice.
